25% off — a quarter off the price
Twenty-five percent off is the cleanest discount in retail because it maps directly to a fraction everyone understands: one-quarter off, three-quarters paid. It's the standard discount for outlet stores and the typical floor price for end-of-season apparel.
Mental math is direct: divide the price by 4 to get your saving. $60 divided by 4 is $15 saved, $45 to pay. If division is awkward, halve the price twice: half of $80 is $40, half of that is $20 saved.
The savings at common price points feel substantial: $12.50 off $50, $25 off $100, $50 off $200. Once you cross the $100 line, 25% starts producing dollar figures that change purchasing decisions.
This discount appears most reliably during back-to-school season (late July/August), spring fashion launches, and the second wave of holiday sales between Thanksgiving and December.
Worth knowing: 25% versus 30% is an interesting comparison because 30% saves you exactly 20% more dollars than 25%. If a retailer historically jumps from 25% to 30% within a week, waiting often makes sense for larger purchases.
One pattern to watch: "25% off your entire purchase" with exclusions. Furniture, electronics, and designer brands are commonly excluded. Read the fine print before building a cart.
How to calculate 25% off
Multiply the original price by 0.75 (which is 1 − 25/100):
Sale Price = Original × 0.75
For example, 25% off $120:
$120 × 0.75 = $90.00. You save
$30.00.
