Seventy-five percent off is where retail goes to die. Items at this level survived multiple previous markdowns without selling, and the retailer is now actively losing money on them in exchange for clearing the floor.

The math maps to a clean fraction: three-quarters off, one-quarter paid. Divide the original price by 4 and that's what you pay. An $80 item costs $20. A $240 item costs $60.

At common price points the final prices feel almost incidental: pay $6.25 on a $25 item, $12.50 on a $50 item, $25 on a $100 item, $125 on a $500 item. At the $500 level, walking out for $125 changes the calculus on what's worth buying.

The retail calendar for 75% is highly seasonal. The biggest windows are mid-January (winter clearance), late February, and the first two weeks of January for holiday-themed merchandise (which routinely hits 75% off the day after Christmas).

The tradeoffs at this discount level are severe and worth listing:

• Selection is whatever survived four prior markdowns — typically odd sizes and items with minor cosmetic flaws.
• Returns are often final sale, with no exchanges or refunds permitted.

This is the discount level where buying for storage starts making sense. Wrapping paper, ornaments, and decor have stable utility regardless of when you buy them.
